New Drug Development
New drugs are emerging from the basic science laboratories and moving toward testing in human trials. The ones furthest along are based on the amyloid hypothesis. The hypothesis is that Alzheimers disease starts with the accumulation of amyloid plaques, and that limiting this accumulation will change the progress of Alzheimers disease. Scientists have isolated enzymes called secretases, which are thought to lead to the formation of beta-amyloid. Secretases are categorized as proteases, the same type of enzymes that are targeted by protease inhibitors to treat AIDS. Drugs called secretase inhibitors are being developed to block beta-amyloid formation, and some of these drugs are now being tested.

Future Research for AD
Understanding Alzheimers disease is one of the most active areas in neuroscience research. In 1998, scientists took a big step forward by breeding mice that develop the symptoms of AD. These mice will help researchers unravel the mysteries of AD. Research into future treatments can be divided into several categories.
