Our caregivers help their residents successfully deal with physical, mental, social and emotional challenges on a regular basis. At the same time, they also strive to help each senior to maintain their personal dignity. On this page, our caregivers share some of their experiences with the hope of aiding family members who are caring for an elderly loved one.

Show Respect, Offer Dignity

When I help a resident with something they used to do easily by themselves, I realize that they may feel embarrassed, feeble, frustrated or even angry. To help them through their situation, I treat them with as much dignity as possible. I respect seniors for the beautiful people they are and they appreciate that.

Ginkgo biloba

Examining over 50 studies conducted on Ginkgo for the treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia, a Cochrane Review concludes that there is promising evidence of improvement in cognition and function associated with Ginkgo. According to this review the two randomized controlled studies that focused on Alzheimers patients both showed significant improvement in these areas. The AAGP review did not recommend Ginkgo neither did it warn against its use. A large, randomized clinical study in the US called the GEM study is underway (fully enrolled) and examining the effect of Ginkgo to prevent dementia. Results are expected in late 2007 or early 2008.

Anatomy

The cerebral cortex is an extremely convoluted and complicated structure associated with the "higher" functions of the mind—thought, reasoning, sensation, and motion. Each hemisphere of the cerebral cortex contains areas that control certain types of activity. These areas are referred to as the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe.
